Students can currently qualify for Title I Reading Services based on teacher recommendations, developmental checklists, current reading grades, and/or achievement test scores. The final step of this process is parental permission.
If you hear your child talking about doing the DIBELS, it's not a new dance. It's actually a reading test. The letters in the test's name stand for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. This test is administered to all students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. There are a variety of subtests administered, depending on the grade level of the student. In the earlier grades, students are assessed in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency. Students are only tested in oral reading fluency in the intermediate grades.
The results of this test are used for tailoring lessons to your child's instructional level. The results are also used in determining students who may be in need of extra support in the Title I Reading Program.
If you have any questions about this test, call the reading specialist in your building. She would be happy to speak with you.
